Mixed emotions kind of month...

Well, The beginning of the month of course was awesome! Big Island and the great pulling together of Clann Tartan as a team for both School Days and the awesome Saturday potluck in honor of the dearly departed. (And, holy duck, I loved the hand pies we made!) And, as usual, the Paddle Dance was fun and the whole staying up uber late and chattering with my buddies and other nearby people.
** Bad news came this last Tuesday afternoon, October 16th. Mike Greiner, aka Turtlebelly, long-time Big Island Rendezvous participant, passed away after struggling with cancer. The good thing about the timing, is that he held out for one last Rendezvous, including the wedding of Julie(Dave and Pat Rambo's daughter, and Jimmy Rambo's sister, all long-time Rendezvous Voyageur Encampers) and Elliot Pagel, also Rendezvous guy often seen running the Tomahawk throw. I don't know specific times, but I guess the visitation will be the evening of Friday the 26th and the funeral will be Saturday the 27th. My heart is with his widow and three adorable children as well as everyone within his wide circle of friends and family. **
More recent events and on a happier note, I have for the first time ever, been close to being drunk...and I'm sure a happy one while in that state! (at least so far) I went out with some of my classmates last night and we had too much fun after having bowled, then chattered over supper then danced at one of the bars. Yes...I dance...other than swing dancing or Paddle Dancing...this is big for me! If you're ever in Mason City, Iowa and you like a bit of a dance clubesque feeling with an artsy flair, and a bit of a cozy feel too, go to the Toast bar. Very awesome owner too. Anyhoo, I need to take a shower and get some sleep...night all.

From the cornfields...

Okay, not quite the cornfields...more like downtown Mason City. Well, I'm down at massage school. It's been pretty good so far. The teacher looks a little like Joan Cusack from the right angle. Classmates are a blast, especially Chad, the gay guy from the higher level class. He's absolutely hilarious! We've covered foot reflexology, carpal tunnel massage and the regular arm massage, and will be learning the front of the leg Thursday. So far, I've passed every test we've taken, so I'm feeling relieved.
I'm working on finding a part-time job so I can feed my book addiction. There's an awesome used bookstore by the mall about 5 blocks from my place, and they have a kitty! Good selection, including two books in a trilogy I'd been looking for for at least 4 years now (didn't want to deal with eBay or anything). I have an interview at the Buckle Thursday afternoon, so I'm getting excited.
And, of course, the best news is that it's almost my favorite time of year. October! The weather today has been that perfect mild chill, overcast skies and mild breeze with the light crunch of leaves underfoot! And Rendezvous! Oh, my home for every first weekend in October! Every year I get uber excited once October is around the corner. I guess it's because I've always been there, always had a great time there, and always get to see my friends, my people. I just realized that if this is the 21st annual Big Island Rendezvous, I've been going since I was 3 & 3/4 years old, because I've been out there ever since the first year (my dad was and still is the Assistant Manager at the State Park it was originally held at, then Helmer Myre, now Myre Big Island). Wow...I am soooo a 'Vous-baby. Anyhoo, other than that, I'm also excited about Halloween. I love it mainly because I get another chance to dress in my gear! :) If it was socially accepted to wear that trend more often, I'd show up everywhere in gear. Sadly, that might not be good for a job interview at the mall. *sigh*

I'm graduated...or hitched?

May 12th at 9am was my graduation. The cool part was, one of the marching faculty, who seemed Britsh-like in his robe and all, before zipping the robe, I could tell he was wearing a black dress kilt!!!! :) Made my day! Anyhoo, there was a lot of standing, waiting and sweating (stupid el cheapo fabric of the cap and gown) and then there was the procession and national anthem, then a lot of boring speeches and thanking of dignitaries. Don't ask me why, but the prez of the school and his provost seemed kinda weasel-like to me. Yeah, it's funny calling the guy a provost when I always think of Clann Tartan's provost when I hear the word.
Anyhoo, the student speeches were mostly boring and the one sounded almost exactly like one at my high school graduation. Well, after crossing the stage, having to shake the hands of my Dean(she seemed brusque) and the Prez(funny that he didn't shake the hands of the Science & Technology Grads, only the Arts & Humanities), there was the whole "You are now graduates" speech in which the University President started out with "By the power vested in me..." Me and the girl next to me looked at each other and were like "so does that mean we're now graduated or married? To everyone here? WTF?" One of my friends said "I wondered if I'd gone to the wrong ceremony or something." LOL!

Nervousness....eep!

Tonight is my senior show reception (it technically already opened, but the food and big hubbub is tonight at 7)... I am both looking forward to it, yet dreading it. I mean, the worst parts are over, but there is going to be a lot of people there and I hope things go well. On the plus side, I look good today. Between my Hot Topic-style bodice, my necklace and my hairstyle, I look rather Victorian. Though the celtic-knot green sarong betrays that particular period...*shrug* Oh well, it still looks really good together. I also hope the shortbread goes over well. I thought it was quite tasty, especially still warm, and, as my roommate pointed out, very good with Nutella. Yum! If I'd had time and money to run out and get it, I'd have put a bottle of Nutella next to it tonight and share the yummier flavor. But, alas, a no-go. Other than that, it should be good. Quite a few of my immediate family and friends will actually be able to make it. *sigh* Okay, I suppose I'd better finish getting myself pulled together for work.

Happy Happy Kitty!!!!

Well Easter weekend was entertaining. Spent time with my mum's family down in Nebraska...that was a long drive by the way. But every year around that time there's an auction in a nearby town. Mostly junk and stuff for farmers. But sometimes you find something nifty. Like me this time. My purchase will need to have the paint stripped, a nice varnish put on, and needs to be restrung... I got, for one dollar, a harp!!! Spiffyness! Even if I can't figure it out, it could still be a nifty art project. Now the problem is figuring out where to get new strings. There isn't likely to be a place in Southern Minnesota like that. Oh well, I'll have to figure something out. Oh, right! I also have my senior show coming up soon...which I'm both dreading and excited for.

Woot! Classes are cancelled as of 1pm! This means sledding for my roommate and myself! And on the plus side of morning class was Medieval Art & Architecture talking about the northern art bits, like the Sutton Hoo ship burial and the Book of Kells and all. Right...the only downfall is that if the roads are crappy on Saturday, I won't be able to take Tonya to the Tanglefoot concert for her early birthday present...dangit!

I hate mornings... Okay, it's not as bad as it could be. But when you have morning classes AND night classes, it's hard to get excited. Though I will say at least tonight's class is Rea's. She's one of the best instructors I've ever had. Mainly because she's crazy enough and yet more grounded. The other painting teacher's okay, but he talks too much about try this, blah blah blah, and this is crap(not meant in a hugely hurtful way) and what is your goal, blah blah blah. Rea had us get a mat each and take the first 15 minutes lying down in the dark, listening to either music or just each other breathing, letting ourselves destress. And outside of logging in how much time we spend in the studio or at home, she pretty much said, just start painting and we could work on 1 painting or 100 paintings, or whatever, as long as we were working. I wish all of my classes were more like her class. *sigh* c'est la vie.

Well, my nice long winter break is over. It's time to go back to Mankato and classes. Part of me's glad to return. Albert Lea is a bummer outside of Rendezvous. But, I've gotten to see some of my friends I haven't seen for a while and I'm mostly kind of weirded out to be graduating this spring.
Well, my birthday, christmas, New Years and my brother's birthday are all done. In a week my break will be over. I really don't want it to be over. :( Mainly for the fact that I don't want to have the next semester go by as fast as the first one. On the plus side, it'll be nice to be back in Mankato again. *sigh* It sounds like Tonya and I will be going to the cities tomorrow for a friend's wedding and then a stop at the Dick Blick store. If we have time and figure out where it is, we may have to stop by SR Harris. We've denied ourselves much fabric shopping, so we figure we deserve some now.

Mum dropped a bomb...

Well, life seemed all peachy-keen enough 'til mum dropped a bomb on me tonight. Turns out my brother and sister-in-law are no longer together. I guess he caught her with some other guy, and apparently she's been doing this for a while. I guess that would explain her seeming so distant and hard to talk to. ARRRRGH! That's what his first wife did to him! Except this time, my nephew's in the middle of all this, probably totally confused! You know, I'm starting to think winter is not a good time for me. One of my cousins died around Christmas, same year as my cat, who died that Christmas Eve day. about 2 years ago I was in a winter accident with my mum, a winter accident with my friend and now-roommy, and found out my mum and her fiance broke up and we had to move. Then finding out this this year, a week before my birthday and two weeks before Christmas... I hope this doesn't condition me to hate the month of December... On the plus side, my break starts Friday night and goes 'til January 14th or something. *sigh*

It's that time of year again...

Yes, it's the time of year most of us college students hate with a passion. Class registration. I swear I finally get one thing fixed and something else comes up...and it's all either computer or school issues, not my own human error. On the plus side, Turkey Day was pretty good. My brother brought his chef's hat and did his Swedish Chef impersonation "Bork, Bork!" Turkey at mum's, ribeye beef at dad's... *drool* Very tasty! And dad made homemade Apple Pie!!!!! *Happy, happy kitty!* I also got the joy of setting up the fake Christmas tree...wish we'd get a real one again...I also wish mom hadn't downgraded so many decorations as she did a couple years ago...but none the less, I decorated the tree on my own, and it turned out pretty spiffy for what we had. I've been knitting still, but now I'm working on a ripple pattern scarf for a friend's mum. Oh, and I took pictures of my paintings that made it into the student gallery show, and I'm just waiting for mom to take enough more pictures to get them developed. Anyhoo, I really need to go find food, so TTFN!

Early weekend.

Yay! We have real internet again! Hickory Tech is stupid...*grumble* But now we have Charter internet. And thanks to some sort of MEA-like sitch, we don't have classes tomorrow (well, I didn't have classes on Fridays anyways) so I also don't have to get up for workstudy. So SLEEP!!! :D And finishing altering a few things on my dress for our Swing Dance costume ball. I'm uber excited! I've got this gorgeous vintage-look black beaded choker and now earrings that match! (I love shopping with my roommate! :P ) Oh, and I was uber brave and submitted three watercolor paintings into our student show. I'm not expecting anything to make it in, considering this is my first try at submitting to a gallery. But it's a start.

Midterms, projects and swing, oh my!

Today is going to be a long day...so will tomorrow, but that's not the point yet. Today is the day I get to study like mad for my Realism to Post-Modernism midterm tomorrow, sew like mad to finish my Drawing Workshop project for tomorrow, and still have energy to help with lessons tonight for the swing dance club. Mondays are nutty. The of course tomorrow will be long for the fact of being at school from 8:30am-8:50pm and take my midterm and have the critique of my project. But Wednesday will be less painful. And we won't have my night class Thursday night because the prof's being nice. Other than that Things aren't too shabby. I have a me-sized, not natural-colored monmouth cap that I have for normal use. Man, I'm really getting the hang of this knitting business. I'm actually on my third cap, though this next one is also for fun. Another plus is that a week from tomorrow is Halloween! :) I heart-piece this holiday. I can wear my gear and I won't get as many looks as I would walking in public during Rendezvous season. On Monday we'll be have a costumed swing dance, so I'll be vaguely 1920s-esque. Halloween itself, I will be in my gear, tail and all. The whole 12 hours of school! :D Yeah, I think my Drawing Workshop/Life Drawing teacher might give extra credit to those who dress up too. Heehee. I'm excited. I'm also excited for all the Halloween tv specials! Woot! Anyhoo, TTFN!

First entry dance!

Hello, hello. It seems I've finally gotten myself a LiveJournal space. Life isn't going too badly. We got out of my night class early and I just finished my practice chibi-sized Monmouth cap! I screwed up the brim, and I didn't have enough tail to make the supposed "loop" but it is done and looks pretty darned spify...considering I only just learned to knit last Wednesday night. But, upon reviewing images and two very reliable sets of instructions, I see where I messed up and I can at least fix my issue on the brim. And I think I now get the loop part too. Yayness! Anyhoo, I'm going to finish checking some email. Au revoir!
